Illustrators come for the 2015 Utah Southern Idaho SCBWI Illustrator’s Conference

A great group of illustrators showed up for this years 2015 Utah Southern Idaho SCBWI Illustrator’s Conference in Salt Lake City. We had illustrators from as far north as Montana and Idaho and as far south as St. George. We had a great display of portfolios from about 42 talented illustrators.

Mark Pett presented on “How to Get from Blank Page to Bookshelves”. I watched Mark as he autographed and drew in my new copy of “The Girl and the Bicycle”. His hand grasped an Inktense pencil and circled around on the paper back and forth until a gentle little boy appeared on the title page like magic. He was just as skillful at his presentation and delivered 10 steps he takes when working on his book ideas. It was great to see his vision for his new book “Lizard from the Park” and how he worked from the first spark of an idea to the finished book.

Kristine Brogno traveled from San Francisco and Chronicles Books to share her presentation on “Words + Pictures/ Pictures + Words What’s the difference?” She is the award winning Art Director and designer from Chronicle. It was a delight to have her come to the conference. Her presentation had great information for the seasoned illustrator and new illustrators alike. She was friendly and easy to approach with questions. She has a love for great picture books and her presentation opened my eyes to many of the subtleties in picture books and what makes some of the classics so loved.

Guy Francis is the illustrator of many picture books. He spends hours in his basement studio illustrating but when he comes out he always wears a big grin. He talked about what art directors like to see in illustrators. From Talent, Professionalism and Personal Attributes his presentation gave us a good look at what we should strive for as professional illustrators. He also gave some insight into his Clark the Shark books.

After a lunch of soups and bread, and networking with others at the conference, we had a first look. Illustrators submitted a piece of their art work which was shown up on the screen and then critiqued by Brogno, Francis and Pett. We had high quality illustrations from those that attended and we were reminded about what we should think about in our own illustrations.

We had a question and answer session followed by the last activity of the day which was sketching children. It was the perfect way to end a day for children’s book illustrators.
Thanks to every one who attended and the local art directors who came to check out the portfolios.

Guy Francis
Guy began illustrating at the age of 9. His first projects included his 4th grade bulletin board and numerous cartoon characters commissioned by his friends for 25¢. It wasn’t until high school that Guy realized a person could make a living being an artist, and while attending Brigham Young University, he got his first children’s picture book job illustrating Showdown at Slickrock by Pat Bagley. Since then he has published a variety of work including book covers, children’s games, early chapter books and picture books. He is thrilled to be making a living doing what he loves.
