The Utah Southern Idaho SCBWI Illustrators Conference was February 1. Illustrator Manelle Oliphant introduced us to her relatives and warned us that the juggling would be lame. They started out our conference with a sampling of “Juggling Art and Life”.

Nathan Hale, the author and illustrator of “Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales” “One Dead Spy” gave us practical advice and offered us many tips from his experience. He talked about his calaboration with author Rick Walton and their book “Frankenstein” a take off on “Madeline”. Like a lot of successful illustrator’s these days, he makes his own work.

Kristyn Crow the author of many books such as “Zombelina” talked about “Writing Like a Screen Writer”. She gave some great information about writing that can be used for illustrators creating there own works. She talked about hooks, zombies and powerful reads.

Bethanne Andersen illustrator of “Louisa The Life of Louisa May Alcott”spoke on “What New Hell is This”. She told the illustrator’s do not quit and the smallest things matter. Do your own work and throw it out there.

All three presenters were wonderful. Local art directors were invited to join us for some soup and take a look at the portfolios that illustrators displayed. After lunch we broke into groups and critiqued portfolios and chose the winner of the illustration challenge.

    Sounds like a good day was had by all. Even writer people can learn something hanging around illustrator people.
