Register now for the Annual Utah/Southern Idaho SCBWI Illustrator’s Conference. This year we are excited to have Martha Rago the Executive Art Director of Harper Collins Children’s Books and Mark and Caralyn Buehner the writer and illustrator team of many picture books. $65.00 for students

$75.00 for non SCBWI members

$5.00 for portfolio display

A table will be set up for those participating in the portfolio display. Portfolios should be 12″ x 18″ or smaller (when closed) and can be displayed with one stack of post cards or business cards.  Portfolios should contain 10 – 15 pieces in a contained portfolio. Please no originals. Put your best piece first, followed by your best piece second, followed by your best piece 3rd and 4th. etc. ending up with your strongest piece. You can also attach a book dummy to your portfolio. Place it after your illustrations and attached with a string from your book dummy to your portfolio. (You want your portfolio geared to children’s art and story telling.  Martha Rago and those attending the conference will have some time to view the portfolios. Martha Rago Intensive

Workshop on developing characters and their corresponding world.

Attendees will choose a manuscript to work with or a concept described in the packet. The goal is to create characters and details that describe and bring them to life.

First Step Character Studies: loose sketches and color pieces showing style and technique for an initial critique via email. These will have to be turned in by January 20th.

Second State: using manuscript, work up rough dummy. Figure which scene is most dramatic and interesting and work up a sample spread incorporating comments from character sketches or a jacket image. Bring them to the live critique at the conference.

After January 12, 2012

Martha Rago

Throughout her career as a designer and art director, Martha Rago has been fortunate to work with many established and award-winning illustrators including David Small, Ed Young, Tomie DePaola, Kadir Nelson, Rosemary Wells, Susan Jeffers and Mo Willems. She has also helped develop work from picture book talents early in their careers like Demise Fleming, Peter McCarty, Julie Paschkis and Antoinette Portis and had the pleasure of seeing them grow and receive acclaim over the years.

Martha is currently the Associate Creative Director for HarperCollins Children’s Books, where she has been for 10 years. She oversees the development and design of HarperCollins picture books under the Harper imprint including those in the Rayo, Collins, in the estate programs of C.S. Lewis and Shel Silverstein, the Katherine Tegen imprint, and the Blazer & Bray imprint.

Mark Beuhner is an amazing illlustrator of many children’s books such as “Niccolini’s Song” written by Chuck Wilcoxen and “My Life with the Wave” written by Catherine Cowan.

Caralyn Beuhner has written many of the books Mark has illustrated and others such as “Would I Ever Lie to You” illustrated by  Jack E. Davis

    I think I may be interested. I need a kick in the pants and some illustrators to rub shoulders with. There’s no link to be able to register. How do you do it?

      Hey Julie, It will be great to have you come to the conference. It is going to be a great one. The regional advisor is setting up registration on the SCBWI national site. It should be up by the first of December or shortly there after. I will post it on the blog when I know its up. Sherry
