The Conference Schedule

8:30 – 9:00 Bagels and greet

9:00 – 10:00 Finding Characters (Presented by Sherry Meidell)

10:00 – 10:15 Break

10:15 – 11:15 Live sketching session ( children ages 9 – 3 yrs old)

11:15 – 12:15 Taking your live sketches and turning them into book characters and illustration ideas

12:15 – 1:15 Poor Man’s Soup and Bread

1:15 – 2:15 Breaking into the Illustration Market (presented by Shawna Tenney and Manelle Oliphant)

2:15 – 2:30 Break

2:30 – 3:30 Critiques of sketches and artwork (photo sketches and illustrations for blog)

Portfolio to share

One finished illustration for critique. You can bring a copy.

Two sketch books (one for live sketches and the other one for sketching from your first sketch book) It would be nice if one of the sketch books was at least 9” x 12”

Pen for sketching

The Presenters

Manelle Oliphant graduated with a BFA in illustration from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2004. She enjoyed working as an in-house illustrator and designer for a year and a half before she decided to pursue free lance illustration. Since then she has enjoyed creating illustrations for books, magazines, stamps and theater posters.
When she’s not drawing she enjoys reading, music, and performing with her Improv comedy team.

Sherry Meidell has illustrated many picture books including “Emma Jo’s Song” by Faye Gibbons and “The Centaur” by May Swenson. She is a signature member of the Utah Watercolor Society and has received Awards of Excellence on her watercolors. Children’s Book illustration is her passion. Shawna Tenney graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration from Brigham Young University in 2004.  She started working as a freelance illustrator in 2005 and has been illustrating from home and loving it ever since.
Shawna has created artwork for 14 books along with children’s magazines, charities, educational materials, religious materials and theater playbills.
Shawna continues to love developing her artwork and learning more every day.  She works in a number of mediums including acrylics, digital- photoshop and painter, charcoal, pastels and watercolor. You can see her work at www.shawnajctenney.com
